Your Guide to the UFC 317 Prelims

Read Time:3 Minute, 53 Second

UFC 317 goes down on June 28 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a stacked card headlined by a high-stakes showdown for the vacant lightweight title. Ilia Topuria makes the move up in weight to face Charles Oliveira, a matchup booked after former champ Islam Makhachev chose to pursue gold at welterweight instead. In the co-main event, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja puts his belt on the line against Kai Kara-France.

As always, this edition of Guide to the Prelims shines a light on the undercard—not the main event. Here’s everything you need to know about the UFC 317 Prelims:

How to Watch UFC 317:

Viviane Araujo vs. Tracy Cortez

Viviane Araujo and Tracy Cortez are both looking to make a serious move up the flyweight rankings. The division remains wide open, with contenders like Natalia Silva and Jasmine Jasudavicius gaining momentum, Rose Namajunas back in the mix, and even rumors of Zhang Weili entering the conversation. With the canceled Blanchfield vs. Barber matchup leaving a temporary gap in the title chase, a standout performance here could catapult either Araujo or Cortez into serious title contention.

Jack Hermansson vs. Gregory Rodrigues

This fight easily could have landed on the main card. But instead, Talbott vs. Lima and Royval vs. Van were moved up to fill the empty slots. Rodrigues has shown flashes of brilliance despite inconsistent performances. He is always full speed ahead looking for the finish, and it’s never far away. Hermansson, a UFC veteran since 2016, remains a fixture near the top of the middleweight division. Neither fighter favors the back foot, and will both be moving forward and bringing the action. So, fans should expect a crash in the center of the octagon with this one.

Hyder Amil vs. Jose Delgado

Hyder Amil remains undefeated and has made a strong impression since joining the UFC, earning two KO/TKO victories in his rookie season. With a well-rounded skill set and an aggressive striking style, Amil has quickly established himself as a featherweight prospect to watch.

He faces a dangerous and hungry opponent in Jose Delgado. At just 27 years old, he’s in the midst of a breakout year. Delgado has built an impressive résumé outside the UFC, with all nine of his professional wins coming by finish, showcasing his killer instinct and ability to end fights early. His only career loss came by decision.

The age gap—Amil at 35 and Delgado at 27—could be a factor in what should be an explosive matchup. You will want to pay attention, and make sure you don’t sleep on this fight.

Jhonata Diniz vs. Alvin Hines

This heavyweight banger has excitement written all over it and promises fireworks from the opening bell. Jhonata Diniz came into the UFC with high expectations and delivered early. He regularly showcased his powerful striking and athleticism in his first UFC campaign. A former kickboxing standout, Diniz transitioned seamlessly into MMA and quickly established himself as a force in the heavyweight division.

At UFC 309, his momentum was briefly halted. He suffered his first professional loss via doctor stoppage against veteran Marcin Tybura. Diniz was originally slated to face Justin Tafa. But now finds himself standing across from a surging newcomer.

Alvin Hines steps into the Octagon for the first time with a perfect record and a reputation for violent finishes. Undefeated as a pro, Hines has stopped all but one of his opponents. He consistently proves he carries serious knockout power and has a killer instinct that’s tailor-made for the UFC’s heavyweight division. His ability to end fights quickly makes his debut intriguing.

With both men known for their finishing ability, this clash is unlikely to reach the final horn. Fans can expect an explosive showdown that could steal the show early in the night.

Honorable Mention

Jackson McVey steps in on just two weeks’ notice to make his UFC debut. He last fought on Friday, June 13, which turned out to be unlucky for his opponent as McVey added another quick finish to his record. Since turning pro, he has finished all six of his fights in the first round, with four coming in under a minute. He has clearly outgrown the regional scene, and now it’s time to see if he’s ready for the big stage.

UFC 317 is headlined by two massive title fights. But, the action starts early—and the next big breakout star might just be fighting before the main card.
