Gunther Is the Best Heel in Wrestling And It’s Not Even Close

For years, wrestling fans have debated one question: who is the best heel in the business?
Some will point to Dominik Mysterio because of the constant boos. Others will bring up Roman Reigns whenever he embraces his darker side. Every generation has its defining villain. Some even point to AEW’s MJF for his off-the-wall shock value.
Today, though, there isn’t much of an argument. That title belongs to Gunther.
Gunther Stands Out
The beauty of Gunther’s character is that he has evolved without abandoning what made him successful in the first place. He debuted as an unstoppable force who dismantled opponents inside the ring. Every chop, every suplex and every victory reinforced one simple message: Gunther wasn’t here to entertain people, he was here to dominate them.
That part of his character hasn’t changed. What has changed is everything outside the ropes.
Over the last couple of years, Gunther has become one of WWE’s strongest talkers, not because he’s loud or overly theatrical, but because everything he says carries weight. His promos aren’t built around empty insults. They’re built around facts.
He ended Goldberg’s career, he forced John Cena into retirement and he backed up every promise he made. That’s what makes Gunther so frustrating for fans. You want to argue with him, but he keeps proving himself right.
The Career Killer
Few moments demonstrated that better than the aftermath of John Cena’s retirement. Fans were so furious with Gunther that they threw obscenities at him as he made his way to the bus. Arenas booed every word that came out of his mouth.
That’s genuine heel heat. Not because Gunther was trying to be funny or looking for cheap reactions. Because fans truly hated what he represented and hated that he backed it up.
That’s becoming increasingly rare in modern wrestling. Fast forward to today, and Gunther has become WWE’s most dependable villain. You can place him into virtually any storyline and he’ll make it feel important.
His current rivalry with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis is a perfect example.
SummerSlam’s Standout Feud
Aldis hasn’t wrestled in years, yet this feud already feels believable because Gunther is involved. In fact, it’s difficult to picture anyone else filling this role. Gunther has the credibility to make fans believe he’d gladly destroy a respected authority figure simply to send a message.
We’ve seen this before.
Last year, Gunther stepped into the ring with Pat McAfee at Backlash. While fans have always been divided on McAfee, there was no confusion about who the villain was that night. Gunther brutalized him, embraced every ounce of the crowd’s hatred and walked away exactly as a heel should.
Now, SummerSlam presents another opportunity to reinforce that identity. Gunther shouldn’t squeak out a victory over Nick Aldis. He should dismantle him.
Every strike should remind viewers that Gunther isn’t interested in putting on a spectacle, he wants to break people. That’s who he is, and WWE has done a solid job protecting that image. More importantly, it should position him exactly where he belongs: next in line for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Future WWE Champion
Gunther has repeatedly voiced his frustration over being overlooked for championship opportunities. If he destroys Aldis at SummerSlam, there should be no debate left.
CM Punk may currently hold the championship, but Gunther feels like the inevitable challenger. And eventually, the inevitable champion.
Some fans criticize Gunther’s slower, more methodical style inside the ring. They’re missing the point. That’s exactly how a great heel wrestles.
Gunther slows every match to his pace. He frustrates the audience, punishes the babyface and removes hope one strike at a time until the crowd desperately wants someone—anyone—to stop him. That makes his in-ring character work so great.
Being a great heel isn’t about getting booed the loudest. It’s about making fans emotionally invest in seeing your downfall. Right now, nobody does that better than Gunther.
Whether he’s ending careers, destroying legends, humiliating authority figures or chasing the Undisputed WWE Championship, Gunther continues to prove that he’s the complete package.
In a wrestling landscape filled with entertaining villains, Gunther stands alone as the one fans genuinely want to see lose. Ironically, that’s exactly why he keeps winning.
