Stephen Thompson vs. Vicente Luque added to UFC 244

The welterweight division can mix and match almost anyone and get a good fight out of it.

Stephen Thompson vs. Vicente Luque at UFC 244 is just further proof of that.

By default, UFC 244 was expected to be a big event right from the moment that it was announced that it will be held in Madison Square Garden. With multiple big-time matchups already on tap, it would appear that there are plenty more on the way.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto confirmed on Tuesday that the UFC’s return to New York City will be treated to another intriguing welterweight scrap as Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (14-4-1) will face off with Vicente Luque (17-6-1) at the November 2 date.

For Brazil’s “Silent Assassin” in Luque, this will undeniably be his biggest fight yet.

A perennial dark horse at 170-pounds since his arrival in the UFC off of The Ultimate Fighter season 21 in July 2015, the 27-year old has started his career off nicely as he’s 10-2 in the organization.

Currently riding a six-fight winning streak after a recent fight of the night victory over Mike Perry at UFC Uruguay, Luque is 10-1 in his last 11 bouts with his lone loss coming to a fellow divisional dark horse, Leon Edwards.

As for his next opponent in the former two-time title challenger, “Wonderboy,” he will be looking to regain that long lost momentum that he once held tightly within his grasp.

Thompson, 37, has hit a bit of a rough patch after starting out 13-1 in his brilliant career. Riding a two-fight losing streak after losses to Darren Till and Anthony Pettis with some injuries mixed in along the way, the Simpsonville, South Carolina native is 1-3-1 in his last four outings.

The addition of the bout makes it the third welterweight showdown on the card. You can see what other fights are currently lined up for UFC 244 below.
