Leon Slater Will Become Wrestling’s Hottest Free Agent

Read Time:2 Minute, 56 Second

Leon Slater is quietly becoming one of the most intriguing names to watch heading into the back half of 2026—and it has nothing to do with what he’s doing inside the ring right now.

With his Total Nonstop Action Wrestling contract rumored to expire this fall, Slater is expected to hit free agency as one of the most sought-after young stars on the market. And while many assumed his next destination was already decided, a new wrinkle has made things far more interesting.

WWE Once Felt Like a Lock

Slater’s working relationship with WWE has been well documented over the past year. As X-Division Champion, he didn’t just stay within the TNA bubble, he crossed the line. He defended his title against WWE talent, became a regular presence on NXT programming, and built strong chemistry teaming with Je’Von Evans.

The biggest spotlight came in December 2025, when Slater appeared on Saturday Night’s Main Event during John Cena’s final WWE appearance. On that stage, Slater and Evans stood across the ring from established stars like AJ Styles and Dragon Lee. It was a clear sign WWE already viewed him as more than just a guest.

Because of that exposure and familiarity, the assumption across the wrestling world was simple: once Slater’s TNA deal expired, WWE would be his landing spot.

AEW Enters the Chat

That assumption may no longer hold. According to a report from Self Made Pro on Self Made Sessions, there is internal interest within All Elite Wrestling to bring Slater in.

“Months ago, it was considered a formality that he’s going to WWE… But what I am telling you is that there are many people in AEW pushing for them to… sign him.”

“I do know that people in AEW are pushing for them to inquire about him… we’re headed towards a bit of an arms race here once he’s available.”

That last line is key, this could all be a race to sign the hot free agent.

A Perfect Fit for AEW?

From an in-ring standpoint, it’s not hard to see why AEW talent would be advocating for Slater. His fast-paced, high-risk style aligns naturally with AEW’s identity, particularly in divisions that thrive on athleticism and innovation. The same traits that made him stand out in TNA’s X-Division could translate seamlessly to AEW’s stacked roster.

But there’s more to it than just style. AEW offers a different kind of opportunity: less structure, more freedom, and the chance to immediately mix it up with a wide range of international talent. For a rising star still defining his ceiling, that could be incredibly appealing.

Familiarity vs. Opportunity

This is where things get interesting. Because WWE offers familiarity, infrastructure, and long-term visibility, while AEW offers creative freedom and stylistic compatibility. It’s just a matter of what he personally prefers.

Slater has already proven he can thrive in WWE’s system. But, he hasn’t committed to it yet. And now, for the first time, he may not have to. If the report holds true, Leon Slater’s contract situation won’t just be another free agency story—it could become a legitimate tug-of-war between two of wrestling’s biggest companies. What once felt like a foregone conclusion is now anything but.

And come fall, Leon Slater may find himself at the center of one of wrestling’s most compelling bidding wars.
