Malcolm Wellmaker Faces a Key Test at UFC Fight Night 276

Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Malcolm Wellmaker is back this Saturday at UFC Fight Night 276. But, this isn’t just another fight. It’s a reality check.

Coming into UFC 322, Wellmaker looked like the next guy at bantamweight. He was 10-0, undefeated, and had already racked up three first-round knockouts in the UFC against the likes of Adam Bramhald, Cameron Saaiman and Kris Moutinho.

Everything about him screamed future contender. And then he lost.

Just like that, the hype slowed down after UFC 322 when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Ethyn Ewing. Of course, the same fans who were ready to push him to the top suddenly started questioning whether he was ever that guy to begin with — because that’s how this sport works.

Wellmaker’s Bounce Back

Now, for the first time in his career, we get to see what Malcolm Wellmaker actually is; not when everything is going right, but after things went wrong.

To his credit, that loss to Ethyn Ewing wasn’t a collapse. He didn’t get exposed in 30 seconds or flatlined, he went all three rounds in a tough fight and lost a decision. He showed durability and proved that he could hang, but now comes the harder part.

Proving he can evolve.

Another Hyped Prospect

Because this Saturday, standing across from him, is Juan Diaz, a dangerous debuting fighter with momentum.

Diaz is 15-1-1 and coming off a nasty spinning back elbow knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series. He’s not just flashy either; seven of his fifteen wins have come by finish, and he’s shown he can win fights that go long. Despite being new to UFC, he has more experience than Wellmaker.

So, this will be a test.

For Diaz, it’s a chance to make a statement in his UFC debut by taking out a once-hyped prospect. For Wellmaker, it’s something bigger.

It’s the question every prospect eventually has to answer after their first loss — was it real, or were you just undefeated? Malcolm has predicted another first round knockout this weekend, will that prediction ring true?

Saturday night, we find out when Malcolm Wellmaker battles Juan Diaz at the UFC Meta Apex for UFC Fight Night 276 on May 16th.
