AEW & The Former WWE Wrestler Dilemma
The idea of AEW signing former WWE talent on paper, makes sense. To sign talent with TV experience and that were once exposed to large audiences, is good business. But in reality, many former WWE wrestlers haven’t transitioned well into AEW, and there’s multiple reasons why:
- They See AEW As A Temporary Job
- Working For WWE Is The Main Goal
- The Childhood Dream Factor
- Rebranding To A New Fanbase
- The In-Ring Work Could Be More Demanding In AEW
AEW needs to focus its attention on signing more indie and international wrestlers. There’s plenty of wrestlers that would be interested in working for them. Especially wrestlers from countries like Spain, England, Japan, and Mexico. Those are interesting markets that AEW should explore for talent. But, they should keep their eyes open everywhere.
This doesn’t mean AEW should 100% give up on signing WWE wrestlers. However, they need to be smart on who they bring in moving forward, and even let some go back. AEW can still work with them, but it really depends on if they are willing to embrace the promotion. Swerve Strickland is a great example of someone that understood AEW, and now, he is their world champion. Mercedes Moné, Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, and Adam Copeland are additional examples those that fully embraced the promotion from day one.
AEW needs to prevent the situation with CM Punk from happening again. They need to focus more on the future and long term wrestlers to continue building the promotion.
